An llms.txt file is a plain Markdown file placed at the root of your website (for example, example.com/llms.txt). It gives large language models a short, curated summary of your business and a list of your most useful pages, so AI tools can find the right content without crawling the whole site.
The format was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024. It works alongside robots.txt and your XML sitemap: robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access, the sitemap lists every page, and llms.txt points AI models to the pages that matter most.

The file uses a fixed order. Only the H1 title is required; the rest is recommended.
How to add llms.txt to your website

2. Upload it to your root folder (public_html on most hosts) using your hosting File Manager or FTP. On WordPress, you can also use an SEO plugin that supports llms.txt.
3. Check it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser.

Frequently asked questions
Is llms.txt an official standard?
No. It is a community proposal from llmstxt.org, not a W3C or Google standard. Some AI tools and developer platforms read it, but no major AI search engine has confirmed it as a ranking factor. It is cheap to add and helps describe your site clearly.
Does llms.txt replace robots.txt?
No. robots.txt controls which crawlers may access your pages. llms.txt only summarises your content. To allow or block AI crawlers such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot, use robots.txt.
Where should I upload the llms.txt file?
Put it in the root of your domain so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. A file in a subfolder will not be found.
How many links should llms.txt include?
Keep it focused: your home page, main services, key guides, pricing, about and contact pages. 10 to 40 links is a good range for most business websites. Put less important pages under an “Optional” section.
