What Is Claude SEO?
Claude SEO is the practice of making your website reachable, readable and citable by Anthropic’s Claude. It covers three things: letting Anthropic’s search and user-request crawlers in, being present in the search index Claude draws on, and writing passages Claude can quote with a source link. The goal is to be cited, with a correct link, when Claude searches the web for an answer.
Every AI assistant has its own crawlers, its own search source and its own rules for when to look something up. Calling it all “AI search” hides the details that decide whether you appear. This page covers only what is specific to Claude. If you need OpenAI’s side, read about OpenAI’s crawlers and ChatGPT search. If your concern is what every model says about your brand, that is a separate piece of work.
Claude SEO vs ChatGPT SEO vs LLM SEO vs GEO vs AEO
These services share tools but each answers a different question. Use the second column to decide where to start. We scope them so no work is duplicated.
| Service | The question it answers | Main levers | Start here if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude SEO (this page) | Can Anthropic’s crawlers and search stack reach, fetch and cite my pages? | Three Anthropic bots, Brave index presence, quotable lead sentences, docs readability | Your buyers or developers use Claude, or Claude never cites you |
| ChatGPT SEO service | Can OpenAI’s bots and search index find and cite me? | OAI-SearchBot policy, Bing and Google indexing, GA4 tracking | ChatGPT is where your buyers ask |
| LLM SEO service | What do all models know and say about my brand, and is it right? | Accuracy audits, error tracing, corroboration | A model states wrong facts about you |
| Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) | Am I recommended when buyers ask for providers? | Category content, comparisons, citations across platforms | You want “best X in my city” visibility |
| Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) | Does my page become the direct answer? | Question-led formatting, answer schema | You want snippets and AI Overviews |
| AI SEO across every channel | How do all of these fit one plan? | Everything above, sequenced | You want one integrated strategy |
Rule of thumb: if the problem is Claude specifically (its bots, its index, its citations), start here. If the problem is every model at once, start with LLM SEO.
When Does Claude Search the Web and When Does It Answer From Memory?
Claude searches when a question depends on information that is current, changing or outside its training data: recent events, prices and statistics, and details about specific organisations, people or products that may have changed. For stable knowledge such as established facts, concepts and maths, it answers directly without searching. This is how Anthropic documents its web search tool.
That split decides which kind of work helps you. If Claude searches, your pages compete as live sources and ordinary SEO fixes can matter within weeks. If it answers from memory, no page you publish today can change the answer until Anthropic trains a new model. Here is how typical prompts are likely to behave:
| Buyer prompt | Likely path | What decides your visibility |
|---|---|---|
| “Best SEO agency in Vadodara” | Search | Bot access, search-index presence, clear passages |
| “Compare [your brand] and [competitor] pricing” | Search | A dated, readable pricing and comparison page |
| “What is a canonical tag?” | Memory | Training presence only; a citation is unlikely |
| “Summarise this page” with a pasted link | Direct fetch | Claude-User allowed, page renders without tricks |
These paths are our expectations, not rules. Claude decides whether to search, and you cannot force it. That is why our audit tests every priority prompt with web search on and off, so you know which path your buyers actually trigger. For the memory side of the problem, see our work on what language models have already learned about you.
How Does Claude Pick and Cite Sources?
Claude’s search tool sends a query to a search index, receives a list of results, reads the pages it judges relevant and writes an answer with citations. In Anthropic’s documentation, each citation carries the page URL, title and up to 150 characters of the quoted text, and search results also expose the page’s last-updated date. Anthropic does not disclose its ranking logic, so anything beyond this is inference.
Most “get cited by Claude” advice mixes documented fact with vendor speculation. We label every claim so you can tell them apart.
| Claim | Status | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Claude cites pages with URL, title and a short quoted passage | Confirmed | Anthropic web search tool documentation |
| Results carry a page age (last-updated) field | Confirmed | Same documentation |
| Comparison and multi-entity questions can trigger 10 or more searches | Confirmed | Same documentation |
| Newer API versions let Claude filter results with code before reading them | Confirmed (API) | Documented for the API; consumer app behaviour is not documented |
| Claude’s search runs on Brave Search | Reported | Brave added to Anthropic’s subprocessor list in March 2025; independent tests matched citations to Brave results; Anthropic has not named its provider |
| Specific ranking signals such as “authority” or “factual density” scores | Unproven | Vendor claims with no primary source |
| llms.txt changes which pages Claude cites | Unproven | No provider has confirmed it |
What the confirmed facts mean for your pages
Write a sentence that survives being cut
Claude quotes short passages. Open every key section with a complete, self-contained sentence that names the subject and states the claim, so the quoted fragment still makes sense alone.
Make freshness visible and true
Show a real “Updated” date, keep dateModified in your schema accurate, and keep sitemap lastmod honest. Changing dates without changing content is the quickest way to lose trust.
Cover the whole comparison
Questions about alternatives, price bands and “X vs Y” trigger many searches. A page that answers the full comparison fairly gives Claude a reason to pick you as one of its sources.
Keep facts in text and tables
Prices, specifications and credentials locked inside images or scripts cannot be filtered or quoted. Put them in plain HTML text and real tables.
Anthropic’s Three Crawlers: What Does Blocking Each One Cost You?
Anthropic runs three bots, all governed by robots.txt. ClaudeBot collects content that may train Claude models. Claude-SearchBot analyses content to improve the quality of Claude’s search results. Claude-User fetches pages when a person asks Claude a question. Per Anthropic, blocking the last two may reduce your visibility in Claude’s answers, while blocking ClaudeBot is a training opt-out.
| Bot | Purpose, per Anthropic | Effect of blocking, per Anthropic | Our default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude-SearchBot | Navigates the web to improve search result quality | Content is not indexed for search, which may reduce visibility and accuracy in search results | Allow |
| Claude-User | Accesses websites when people ask Claude questions | Content cannot be retrieved for user queries, which may reduce visibility for user-directed web search | Allow |
| ClaudeBot | Collects web content that may contribute to training | Signals that your future content should be excluded from training datasets | Business choice |
A common starting point: be citable, stay out of training
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot Allow: / User-agent: Claude-User Allow: / User-agent: ClaudeBot Disallow: /
Swap the last rule to Allow: / if you are comfortable with training use. Block all three only for confidential or paywalled content, because you will then be absent from Claude’s search answers.
Five Claude-specific checks before you trust your robots.txt
- Allow-list by IP, not just by name. Anthropic publishes its crawler IP ranges as a JSON file at claude.com/crawling/bots.json. Use it to whitelist the bots in your CDN or firewall. Do not block by IP as an opt-out: Anthropic warns this can stop it reading your robots.txt.
- Repeat the rules on every subdomain. Anthropic applies robots.txt per host, so blog., docs. and app. subdomains each need their own file.
- Use Crawl-delay for load, not for blocking. Anthropic supports the non-standard Crawl-delay directive for ClaudeBot. It does not say whether the other two bots honour it, so test before relying on it.
- Remove challenge pages for these bots. Anthropic states its bots do not try to bypass CAPTCHAs. A security plugin that serves a challenge page is, to Claude, a block.
- Read your logs. Look for Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User requests and confirm they receive 200 responses, not 403 or 429. Verify the IP against the published list before trusting a user-agent string.
Is Your Site in Brave Search? The Index Claude Is Reported to Use
Claude’s web search is widely reported to run on Brave Search’s independent index, not Google or Bing. Anthropic added Brave Search to its subprocessor list in March 2025, and independent tests matched Claude’s citations to Brave’s results, though Anthropic has not publicly named its provider. If that holds, a page missing from Brave is missing from Claude’s search, however well it ranks on Google.
We treat this as a working assumption and verify it by testing rather than assuming it. It also explains a pattern we see often: a site that ranks well on Google but is barely cited by Claude. The two engines build separate indexes and rank differently. Here is the check we run first:
- Search
site:yourdomain.comon search.brave.com. Note how many pages appear and which key pages are missing. - Search your brand and five category queries on Brave. Compare the results with Google. Differences show where Claude’s view of your market diverges.
- List who ranks instead of you. The directories, publications and competitors that appear are the pages Claude is most likely to read about your category.
- Request indexing for missing pages through Brave’s URL submission form, and strengthen internal links and your XML sitemap so crawlers can discover them.
- Re-check after a few weeks. We know of no published indexing timeline from Brave, so we log results rather than promise dates.
We know of no Search Console-style dashboard from Brave, so you cannot see crawl errors there. Checking is manual, which is why it is a recurring step in our process and not a one-off task. Indexing problems that block every engine are fixed through crawl and indexing repairs first.
Four Places Claude Meets Your Content
Claude is used for research, writing and coding, so your content reaches it in more ways than a search result. Each route needs something different.
Answers with web search
A buyer asks a question and Claude cites sources. This needs bot access, index presence and quotable passages, as covered above.
A pasted link or uploaded file
A prospect gives Claude your URL or brochure and asks it to summarise or compare. Claude-User must be allowed, the page must render without login or script tricks, and PDFs need real selectable text, not scanned images.
Claude Code and developer agents
Developers using Claude to build against your product fetch your documentation. Stable URLs, one concept per page, code samples in plain text, versioning and dated changelogs make docs far easier to use and cite.
Connectors and MCP
Software products can expose an MCP server so Claude can act on live data, not just read about it. This applies only to products with an API, and we scope it with your developers. To see the idea working, watch us connect a live WordPress site to Claude.
How Do You Track Claude Visibility?
Claude has no console like Google Search Console, so tracking combines four signals: claude.ai referrals in Google Analytics 4, Claude bot requests in server logs, Brave index coverage, and repeated prompt sampling with web search on and off. Together they show whether Claude can reach your pages and whether it cites them.
Referrals
Add claude.ai to your AI-referral channel group in GA4 when the referrer is passed. The pattern we use is described in the GA4 channel setup we describe for ChatGPT, which already includes Claude’s domain.
Server logs
Count Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User requests per page, and check status codes. A page Claude never requests cannot be cited, and a page it requests but receives a 403 for is a fixable problem.
Brave index coverage
Track the share of your priority pages that appear in Brave, monthly. This is the leading indicator for search-driven citations.
Search-on versus search-off sampling
Run a fixed prompt set about five times each, with web search on and off, and record which URLs are cited. The difference between the two runs separates what Claude retrieves from what it remembers. Answers vary from run to run, so we report ranges, never one screenshot.
Our Claude SEO Process
Anthropic Bot Access Report
We test robots.txt, CDN, firewall and security-plugin behaviour for all three Anthropic bots on every hostname, and read your logs for real requests and status codes.
Brave Index Coverage Check
We measure which priority pages appear in Brave, compare category results with Google, and submit and strengthen pages that are missing.
Search-Trigger Prompt Map
We build a prompt set from your real buyer questions and test each with web search on and off, so you know which questions trigger search and which Claude answers from memory.
Citation-Ready Rewrites
Priority pages get a quotable opening sentence per section, real tables for comparisons and prices, sourced figures and truthful update dates. Schema is handled through Organization, Service and FAQ markup.
Docs and Agent Readability Review
For software products: a review of documentation structure, URL stability, code samples and changelog dating, plus an honest view on whether an MCP server is worth building.
Monthly Claude Sample and Report
The same prompts are re-run monthly and after major model releases, with Brave coverage and log data alongside. Reporting follows our usual monthly reporting structure.
What Claude SEO Cannot Do
Credible advice here starts with its limits. This is what we say before you sign anything:
It cannot guarantee a citation. Claude decides whether to search and which sources to cite. We remove barriers and measure the result.
It cannot buy placement. We know of no submission form or paid route to organic citations in Claude. Anyone selling one should be asked for proof.
It cannot rewrite what Claude memorised. Training-based knowledge changes only when Anthropic ships a new model.
It rests partly on a reported fact. The Brave link is well evidenced but not confirmed by Anthropic. We re-test it regularly and will tell you if the picture changes.
It does not replace SEO. Pages that no search index trusts rarely become Claude’s sources.
Who Benefits Most From Claude SEO
Claude suits businesses whose buyers research before they enquire, compare options in depth or work with technical material.

Frequently Asked Questions About Claude SEO
Straight answers to the questions we hear most.
The goal is to be cited with a correct link when Claude searches the web for an answer.
How do I get my website cited by Claude?
Allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User in robots.txt and at your firewall, confirm your pages are indexed in the search index Claude uses (reported to be Brave Search), open each key page with a self-contained sentence that can be quoted on its own, and show an accurate last-updated date. Then test your buyer questions in Claude with web search on and see which pages it cites.
Does Claude use Google to search the web?
Anthropic has not publicly named its search provider. It added Brave Search to its subprocessor list in March 2025, and independent tests found that Claude’s citations matched Brave’s results, so Brave is the working assumption. That means a high Google ranking does not guarantee visibility in Claude. Check your pages in Brave Search as well.
Will blocking ClaudeBot remove me from Claude’s answers?
Anthropic describes ClaudeBot as the crawler that collects content for model training, and says blocking it signals that your future content should be excluded from training datasets. Search indexing and user-requested fetching are handled by Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, and Anthropic says blocking those may reduce your visibility in Claude’s search answers.
Which Anthropic crawlers should I allow?
If you want to be cited, allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. Whether to allow ClaudeBot is a business decision about training use of your content. A common setup allows the two citation bots and blocks ClaudeBot. All three obey robots.txt, but rules apply per hostname, so subdomains need their own file.
Can I submit my website to Claude?
We know of no submission form for Claude. It finds pages through its search index and by fetching URLs people give it. What you can do is allow Anthropic’s bots, make sure your pages are indexed in the search index Claude uses, and request indexing through Brave’s URL submission form if pages are missing.
Why does Claude not mention my business?
There are four common causes. Claude answered from memory without searching. Your pages are blocked or missing from the search index it uses. Your pages have no passage that can be quoted on its own. Or competitors and directories have stronger, clearer evidence. A search-on versus search-off prompt test shows which cause applies to you.
How do I track Claude traffic and citations?
Claude offers no console like Google Search Console, so measurement combines four signals: claude.ai referrals in Google Analytics 4, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot requests in server logs, Brave Search index coverage, and repeated prompt sampling with web search on and off. Together they show whether Claude can reach your pages and whether it cites them.
How is Claude SEO different from ChatGPT SEO?
They share principles but not mechanics. Claude uses Anthropic’s three crawlers and a search index reported to be Brave, and it searches only when a question is current, changing or outside its training data. ChatGPT uses OpenAI’s bots and a different index mix. Each needs its own bot policy, index check and tracking setup.
Does Claude remember my website after I update it?
Not in real time. When Claude searches, it reads the current version of a page, so updates can appear in answers once the page is re-indexed. What a model learned in training changes only when Anthropic releases a new model, which no agency can schedule or control.
Does Claude SEO work for local businesses in Vadodara?
It can, mainly for research-style questions such as comparing providers, checking credentials or understanding pricing. Claude has no local map pack, so local relevance comes from retrievable pages, directory listings and reviews that name your city and services. We test prompts that include Vadodara and report what Claude actually cites.
How long does Claude SEO take to show results?
Fixes to crawler access can take effect within days of the bots next visiting. Indexing in the search index can take weeks, and we know of no published timeline from Brave. Changes that depend on model training appear only after a new model is released. We report these timelines separately so expectations stay honest.
