What Is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the practice of making your website easy for ChatGPT to find, read and cite when it answers with web search. It covers four things: letting OpenAI’s search crawler in, being indexed where ChatGPT looks, writing pages that answer detailed prompts in self-contained passages, and tracking the visitors ChatGPT sends. Its goal is to be named and linked in ChatGPT’s answers, not to hold a ranking position.

GoalYour brand named and your pages linked inside ChatGPT answers
First gateOAI-SearchBot must be allowed to fetch your pages
Works onChatGPT’s web search, Deep Research and agent browsing, not its trained memory
Measured byChatGPT referral sessions in GA4, OpenAI bot hits in server logs, repeated prompt sampling

ChatGPT is not a results page. There is no position three to climb to. It reads several sources, writes one answer and links a few of them, so the job is to be one of the sources it reads and trusts. Everything below is specific to how ChatGPT does that.

Improving what every language model knows and says about your brand, including factual accuracy, is a wider job handled by our brand-accuracy and cross-model work. This page stays narrow on purpose: ChatGPT’s crawlers, its search behaviour and the traffic it sends. If you would rather handle ChatGPT together with Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity, it sits inside our integrated AI SEO programme.

Why Does ChatGPT Deserve Its Own Strategy?

Because ChatGPT runs its own crawlers, appends its own referral parameter and mixes its own retrieval sources, so tactics built for Google or Perplexity do not transfer one-to-one. It also has scale in India: Sam Altman said in February 2026 that India has over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, making it OpenAI’s second-largest market.

Its own crawlers

OpenAI uses separate bots for search, for user-triggered visits and for model training. Mixing them up is the most common reason a site is invisible in ChatGPT while ranking well on Google.

Its own referral signature

ChatGPT tags the links it sends with utm_source=chatgpt.com. That makes its traffic measurable, but only if analytics is set up to catch it. Most sites we audit file it under Direct or Unassigned.

Its own retrieval mix

ChatGPT does not simply mirror one search engine. The mix of sources it uses is not fully published and is changing, so a strategy built on a single index leaves gaps. We explain this below.

How Does ChatGPT Choose Which Websites to Show?

When ChatGPT searches the web, it splits the question into several narrower searches, pulls pages from the indexes and partners it uses, picks the passages that best answer each part, and writes one answer with source links. A site is shown only if it survives five stages: it is triggered, matched, retrieved, selected and trusted.

1 Trigger→2 Fan-out→3 Retrieval→4 Selection→5 Citation
StageWhat happensWhere sites loseWhat we do
1. TriggerChatGPT decides the question needs fresh, local or specific information, so it searches instead of answering from memory.Your pages target stable definitions that ChatGPT already knows, so there is nothing to cite.Focus on query types that force a search: comparisons, best-in-city, pricing, suppliers, recent changes.
2. Fan-outThe prompt is broken into several sub-searches, such as price, location, industry fit and reviews. No page on your site answers a sub-question, so you drop out of that branch entirely.Map every service to the constraints buyers attach to it and cover each one.
3. RetrievalPages are fetched from the search indexes and partner sources ChatGPT uses.OAI-SearchBot is blocked, the page is not indexed in Google or Bing, or content only appears after JavaScript runs.Bot access test, firewall check, dual-index coverage check, rendering fix.
4. SelectionThe best-matching passages are chosen from the retrieved pages. The answer is buried, vague or has no figures, so a competitor’s cleaner passage wins.Rewrite priority passages: claim first, numbers dated, comparisons in real tables.
5. CitationChatGPT decides which sources to name and link in the final answer.Few independent sources confirm you, or your details conflict across profiles.Align business data everywhere and earn credible mentions where your category is discussed.

Does ChatGPT use Bing, Google or its own index?

OpenAI has not published a full list of its sources. Many older guides state that ChatGPT mostly mirrors Bing. Independent research published in 2026 by Peec AI points to a hybrid instead: OpenAI’s own crawl and index, plus results from outside providers, with the mix varying by query type and shifting between experiments. Some of those details are inferred rather than confirmed.

Practical consequence: do not optimise for one engine. Being allowed for OAI-SearchBot, indexed in both Google and Bing, and consistently described across other sites covers every plausible route into an answer.

ChatGPT’s Three Answer Modes and What Each One Needs

For SEO, ChatGPT answers in three ways: from trained memory, with live web search, and through multi-step research or agent browsing. Only the second and third can send visitors to your site. Search rewards crawlable, passage-ready pages. Research and agent modes reward depth, clear structure and a site a bot can actually navigate.

MODE 1 · MEMORY

Answers from training

No search, no link, no visit. What ChatGPT says comes from what it learned before its cut-off. You cannot edit it directly, only influence what later models see through consistent, widely repeated facts.

SEO value: brand awareness only. Cross-model accuracy work belongs in an LLM SEO engagement.

MODE 2 · SEARCH

Answers with web search

Fast, cited answers built from a handful of sources. This is where most commercial queries land: best provider, pricing, comparisons, local options.

SEO value: highest. Needs OAI-SearchBot access, index coverage and passages that answer on their own.

MODE 3 · RESEARCH & AGENTS

Deep Research and browsing

Longer reports that read many pages, and agent features that click through sites for a user. Page visits are triggered by a person’s request.

SEO value: depth and usability. Clear navigation, content in plain HTML, no walls that hide text, and contact details a bot can read.

Which OpenAI Bots Should You Allow? Three Ready robots.txt Setups

Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search. OpenAI states that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is separate: it gathers training data, and blocking it does not affect search appearance. ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a person asks, and robots.txt rules may not apply to it.

SETUP A · MOST COMMON

Be cited, stay out of training

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

You can appear in ChatGPT search without contributing content to model training.

SETUP B

Be cited and allow training

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

Suits publishers and brands that want maximum reach and are comfortable with training use.

SETUP C · ONLY IF YOU MEAN IT

Opt out of OpenAI crawling

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

You will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Choose this for confidential or paywalled content only.

Four checks most robots.txt guides skip

  1. Wait about 24 hours. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take roughly a day to take effect, so test the next day, not the same hour.
  2. Check the firewall layer. A CDN or security plugin with an AI-bot toggle can block OAI-SearchBot even when robots.txt allows it. We test at both layers.
  3. Verify real traffic, not just user-agent strings. OpenAI publishes IP ranges for each bot, so genuine visits can be told apart from spoofed ones before you whitelist anything.
  4. Read your server logs. Hits from OAI-SearchBot show you are being crawled for search. Hits from ChatGPT-User show a real person’s request caused ChatGPT to open that page.

This section covers OpenAI only. Policies for Anthropic, Google and Perplexity bots sit in the multi-provider crawler policy we maintain for LLM SEO clients. Bot behaviour changes, so we re-verify against OpenAI’s bot documentation before editing any file.

Write for ChatGPT’s Long Prompts, Not Short Keywords

People type two or three words into Google but long, constraint-heavy prompts into ChatGPT. Pages that get cited answer the constraints: location, budget, company size, industry and use case. We map each service to the prompts a buyer would actually type, then make sure every constraint is answered in its own self-contained passage.

Google keywordTypical ChatGPT prompt (illustrative)What the page needs
seo company vadodaraI run a 30-person engineering firm near Vadodara that exports to Germany. Which SEO agency understands export buyers, and what would it cost?An export-focused section, a stated price range, and proof from a comparable client.
dentist in alkapuriWhich dentist in Vadodara is good for a nervous child, open on Sundays and accepts insurance?Passages by situation, opening hours in text and an explicit insurance statement.
ecommerce seo costHow much should a Shopify store doing five lakh rupees a month spend on SEO, and when does it pay back?Cost bands tied to revenue and an honest payback timeline with caveats.

These are examples of the pattern, not claims about any specific business. The point is that each constraint in the prompt becomes a sub-search, and your page must answer it.

Comparison tables

Real HTML tables of options, prices or features are easy for ChatGPT to lift accurately.

Who it is for, and who it is not

Fit statements let ChatGPT match you to a prompt and rule you out of the wrong ones.

Price bands and timelines

Stated ranges with a date beat the phrase contact us for a quote, which gives a model nothing to quote.

Dated, sourced figures

A number with a source and a year is quotable. An adjective is not.

What Else Does ChatGPT Read About You Beyond Your Website?

ChatGPT cross-checks a business against other sources before it recommends it, so profiles and mentions outside your site matter. For local businesses that means consistent Google Business Profile, directory and review details. For online stores it means clean product data. For B2B firms it means credible mentions in industry lists and publications.

LOCAL BUSINESSES

Profiles and reviews

For best-in-city queries, ChatGPT leans on public business information and reviews. Name, address, phone, hours and categories must match everywhere. Some local queries now show map-based business results as well.

We handle this through Google Business Profile upkeep and map-pack visibility work.

ONLINE STORES

Product data hygiene

Price, availability, product identifiers, images and reviews must be accurate in your product pages and feeds. OpenAI’s shopping and checkout programmes changed repeatedly in 2026, so we confirm current requirements before building anything.

The groundwork sits within store-level product SEO.

B2B & SERVICES

Third-party mentions

Being named in best-of lists, industry directories, partner pages and credible publications gives ChatGPT independent confirmation. Fake reviews and paid link schemes are never used. Clear entity and Knowledge Graph signals help ChatGPT tell you apart from similarly named businesses.

We earn these through authority-building outreach.

How to Track ChatGPT Traffic in Google Analytics 4

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends visitors through, so you can track it in GA4. The catch is that some clicks arrive with no medium or referrer and fall into Direct or Unassigned. Build a custom channel group that matches the source, not the medium, and you will capture most of it.

  1. In GA4 open Admin → Data display → Channel groups and create a new channel group (copy the default one).
  2. Add a channel named AI Assistants and move it above Referral and Direct so it is evaluated first.
  3. Set the condition to Source matches regex using the pattern below. Do not add a Medium equals referral condition, or you will miss the untagged clicks.
  4. Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to your new channel group, and add Landing page as a secondary dimension.
  5. Mark your enquiry, call and WhatsApp clicks as key events so ChatGPT sessions can be tied to leads, not just visits.
chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com

The pattern also catches other AI assistants so one channel shows the whole picture. Remove names you do not want grouped.

Three more signals, and what each can and cannot tell you

Server logs

OAI-SearchBot hits prove you are crawled for search. ChatGPT-User hits prove a person’s request opened a page. Neither proves a citation, but a page with ChatGPT-User hits is being used.

Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report

In public preview since February 2026, it reports how often Microsoft’s AI products cite your pages. It is useful as a proxy for retrieval health, but it is not ChatGPT data.

Prompt sampling

We run a fixed set of prompts several times, signed in and out, from different locations, and log whether you are named and linked. Answers vary by run, so we report ranges, not screenshots. To our knowledge, OpenAI offers no publisher dashboard showing citation counts.

Our ChatGPT SEO Process

Six steps, ordered by how fast each one moves results. Every deliverable is something you can verify.

STEP 5

Off-Site Profile Alignment

Business profiles, directories and review platforms brought into line with your site, plus a short list of credible places to earn mentions.

STEP 6

Tracking & Monthly ChatGPT Sample

GA4 channel group, key events and log monitoring installed, then a monthly ChatGPT prompt sample reported against baseline in our standard reporting format.

What ChatGPT SEO Cannot Do

Credible advice here starts with its limits. These are the points we make before anyone signs:

It cannot guarantee a mention. No agency controls what ChatGPT writes. We remove barriers and measure whether you appear more often.

It cannot buy organic placement. OpenAI began showing labelled ads in the United States in February 2026, shown separately from answers. Ads and organic visibility are different budgets, and ads are not the same thing as being recommended.

It cannot make answers identical for everyone. Results vary by wording, location, signed-in state and run, which is why we sample instead of screenshotting once.

It does not replace SEO. ChatGPT retrieves from the same open web you already compete on. Weak foundations produce weak ChatGPT visibility.

Who Benefits Most From ChatGPT SEO

It pays off fastest where buyers research with ChatGPT before contacting anyone: detailed, comparison-style questions with a clear commercial outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions About ChatGPT SEO

Straight answers to the questions we hear most.

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the practice of making your website easy for ChatGPT to find, read and cite when it answers with web search. It covers allowing OpenAI’s search crawler, being indexed where ChatGPT looks, writing pages that answer detailed prompts, and tracking ChatGPT referral traffic. The goal is to be named and linked in answers, not to hold a ranking.

How do I get my website to appear in ChatGPT?

Start by making sure OAI-SearchBot is not blocked in robots.txt or by your firewall, then confirm your key pages are indexed in Google and Bing and render as plain HTML. After that, write pages that answer specific, detailed questions in self-contained passages and keep your business details consistent across other websites. There is no submission form and no way to pay for organic placement.

Can I submit my website to ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI’s publisher guidance says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search as long as you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot. There is no submission form for organic answers. Your levers are crawler access, indexing, content quality and corroboration from other websites.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to find websites?

OpenAI has not published a full list of sources. Older guides say ChatGPT mostly mirrors Bing, but independent research in 2026 suggests a hybrid of OpenAI’s own crawl and index plus outside providers, with the mix changing by query type. We therefore make sure clients are indexed in both Google and Bing and open to OAI-SearchBot instead of betting on one engine.

Will blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT?

No. Per OpenAI, GPTBot collects training data and blocking it does not affect whether you appear in ChatGPT search. Appearance is controlled by OAI-SearchBot. You can block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot to be cited without contributing to model training. Robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply.

Why does ChatGPT not mention my business?

The usual causes, in order: OAI-SearchBot or a firewall blocks your site, your pages are not indexed or only render with JavaScript, no page answers the specific constraints in the prompt, and too few independent sources confirm you exist. A bot access test plus a prompt sample usually shows which one applies.

How do I track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4?

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends visitors through. In GA4, create a custom channel group with a rule that matches the source against chatgpt.com, and do not require the medium to be referral, because some clicks arrive without a medium or referrer and land in Direct or Unassigned. Then review sessions and key events by landing page.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not for organic answers. OpenAI began showing labelled ads in ChatGPT in the United States in February 2026, displayed separately from answers, and says ads do not influence them. Organic mentions come from access, indexing, content and corroboration, so we treat paid and organic visibility as separate budgets.

How is ChatGPT SEO different from LLM SEO, GEO and AEO?

ChatGPT SEO is platform-specific: OpenAI’s bots, ChatGPT’s search behaviour and its referral traffic. LLM SEO covers what every language model knows and says about your brand, GEO focuses on being recommended across AI platforms, and AEO on direct answers in Google. We scope them so work is never duplicated, and a free check shows which you need first.

Does ChatGPT SEO work for local businesses in Vadodara?

Yes, when the business has consistent public details. Local recommendations draw on web sources about the business, so a complete Google Business Profile, matching directory listings, recent reviews and local-intent pages are the main levers. Results vary by user and location, so we sample prompts from several contexts instead of trusting one test.

Does schema markup help ChatGPT?

There is no confirmed evidence that OpenAI reads schema to choose sources. Schema still helps indirectly, because it clarifies who you are for the search indexes ChatGPT draws on and keeps facts consistent. We implement it for those reasons and never promise a ChatGPT result from markup alone.

How long does ChatGPT SEO take to show results?

Fixing bot access and indexing can change what ChatGPT retrieves within weeks, because robots.txt updates apply in about 24 hours and re-crawling follows. Content and off-site changes typically take a few months to show up consistently. Because answers vary, we judge progress over monthly samples, not single prompts.
